Sally Lightfoot Crab

Scientific Name: Grapsus grapsus

Type: Crustacean

Size: 3 - 8 cm

Diet: Mainly Herbivorous, but also scavenges

Distribution: Is not endemic to the Galapagos, and can be found along the South American coast

Status: Least concern

Colouration: Deep reds to vibrant orange or pink

Facts

  • Act as scavengers and decomposers along the shoreline, since their generalist diet allows them to clean up almost anything, from large carcasses to even other  Sally Lightfoot crabs.

  • They are incredibly agile, like their name, being able to run short distances in an instant, cling to the sides of structures, and jump between rocks.

  • Sally Lightfoot crabs also have gaps in their carapace which they can either use to shoot out water to dissuade predators or move over their gills to breathe.
