Type: Bird

Size: 120 - 145 cm

Diet: Omnivorous (plants, insects, crustaceans)

Distribution: Across North and South America, although Galapagos population is unique

Status: Least concern

Facts

  • While incredibly closely related to the American Flamingo, the Galapagos population are unique physically and genetically. This seems to be the exact moment the two groups are becoming separate species.

    • Includes smaller size, changed shape, and smaller eggs.

  • Like other flamingoes, the shade of pink they developed is determined by the quantity and quality of their diet of crustaceans and algae, due to the presence of carotenoids. this helps flamingoes pick a healthy mate.
