Facts
-
Are the only penguins with a distribution north of the equator (but only barely).
-
Evolved from burrowing penguins such as the Humboldt penguin, but since here is a lack of soil on the islands, they live in coastal caves and crevices created from lava instead.
-
Have evolved to be smaller than most penguins, standing at roughly half a meter, to better cope with heat in the tropics, since a higher surface area to body ratio increases heat loss.
