Galapagos Sea Lion

Scientific Name: Zalophus wollebaeki

Type: Aquatic Mammal

Size: 1.5 - 2.5 m

Diet: Piscivorous (fish and crustaceans)

Lifespan: 10 - 15 years

Status: Endangered

Facts

  • As opposed to having a group of females, male seal lions fight over having an area which females inhabit. This means the larger and stronger seals can have vast areas of territory to protect.

  • They are incredibly social and curious animals, often waddling up to things they find interesting, such as playing with sticks, chewing shoes, or chasing other animals like crabs and iguanas.

  • They have a close bond with their parents, with sea lion pups being reliant on their mother for one out of the twenty years.

This sea lion pup was caught chasing a marine iguana by its mother, and got yelled at.
